The layer you never see
This is a downtown San Antonio shower at the waterproofing stage, shot before any tile went on. The grey panels are wedi board. Every seam and every fastener washer is sealed, the corner bench is boarded and sealed the same way, and the pan is a bonded wedi Fundo base with an offset drain.
After tile, none of this is visible again. It is also the layer a one-day wall liner skips entirely, and the reason a shower that looks fine on handover can leak into the subfloor three years later.
The project included demolishing my old tub/shower, installing a Wedi walk-in shower system… He used 12x24 tiles throughout the shower and created a beautiful corner bench.
The conversion process, step by step
- Demo + rough-in. Tub, tile, and subfloor as needed — plastic off the rest of the bathroom, floor runners to the exit. Then relocate the drain, rough-in valves, and set the pan frame. Permit inspection where required.
- Waterproofing. A bonded waterproofing system over every surface that'll be tiled — wedi or Schluter, base and walls. Skipping this layer is the most common reason showers leak, and we don't skip it.
- Tile. Walls, pan, niche. Full-height to the ceiling. Grout sealed before glass.
- Glass + walkthrough. Frameless glass installed, rainhead, handshower, valve trim, final plumbing hookup. You walk the job with Rey, we hand over the written 2-year warranty, and you shower that night.

- Yes, when it is the right call — but real tile over bonded waterproofing is what we recommend and what we build most. Tile lasts longer, it is repairable, and with a bonded wedi or Schluter system underfoot and on the walls the waterproofing is behind the tile where it belongs. An acrylic insert goes in faster and costs less up front, so when budget or speed is the deciding factor we will fit one and tell you plainly what you are trading away. What we will not do is glue panels over existing walls and call it a remodel. You will know which one you are buying before you sign anything.
